I decided to try again. I got some what I hope is better/stronger epoxy. The blank is another piece of oak. I made sure to put plenty of epoxy both inside the blank, and on the tube.

I wasn't taking any chances this time. I cut the corners off the blank to reduce the stresses when I roughed it round. I was also much less aggressive. Success!

Boy, this is my weekend for mistakes. I decided to stain the sanded blank to hopefully accentuate the grain, which went fine. But when I sprayed on the lacquer, I noticed little red fuzzies from the staining rag I used. I should have blown it off with compressed air before I lacquered it. I don't know if you can see the fuzzies in the photos or not, but they're visible in person. I'll have to sand and respray it after the lacquer sets.

Okay, I'm giving up on oak for this pen. For some unknown reason, I decided to try polishing it with Novus. It made it shiny, but also got polish stuck in the oak. I tried blowing it out, but nope, didn't budge. I'm going to turn the blank off the tube, and use a different wood blank.

Got the oak turned off the tube, and the new blank drilled and glued.

i think that you are putting too much finish on. I know that everybody has their own method for finishing, and I am far from experienced, but I put a drop or two of oil on a piece of toilet roll, and then about the same in CA. repeat for as many coats as you choose. Even if you choose to use something other than CA, my point is that there is not enough oil/finish on to drip.

Oak is a difficult one, at least the species that we see in the UK are, in that it needs something to fill the grain with to get a smooth finish- how you choose to grain fill is up to you, but it will need something. that is why polish was trapped in yours. I have some oak pens to do- people have suggested using a thin CA glue and wet sanding with it.

I've done several oak pens in the past, and haven't filled the grain in any of them. I prefer the wood to be rough from the grain, like it is naturally. On this one, I just committed a comedy of errors.

I sanded the finish off, and resprayed it. It looks pretty good now. I might actually get this pen done sometime this century.
