Hi all,
Just a bit of a giggle,
Those that know me know I work in a school..... Yesterday I found 8 old chisels, I thought I could clean them up, a bit of a sharpen.... Job done.
Now as its a school I thought I should only offer to sharpen the odd chisels in DT whilst I have my Sorby set...
Looking for advice,
I have a lathe and a couple second hand chisels that were given to me. I am looking to buy some chisels for turning pens, the good news is the kids will buy me them for me for Christmas.
Am I better off getting the carbide insert radius cutters and handle sets for turning...
Well after reading loads of threads about resin casting, watching u tube, loads of people showing how to make pen blanks I tried,I followed the instructions and tried what other people try, still I get bubbles in my blanks, they look good and about half way down machining I hit the bubbles and they...

Hi everyone,
I need to buy some new pen making chisels and was considering a carbide set. Can anyone recommend to me a good set of pen making chisels or carbide equivalents.
Thank you
Derek
As title says just wondering if anyone uses carbide tipped chisels to turn their pens, I am considering some till I can afford some decent hss chisels and sharpening system.
Am aware I may get two differing opinions but would appreciate advice from anyone using carbide.
Thanks in advance.
Turned this one yesterday, my first turned with proper woodturning chisels - I've been using those carbide tipped thingies up until now. Bought a Sorby Pro Edge and now I can properly sharpen chisels, so the carbide tools are consigned to the drawer. Anyway, here's the first pen turned, an...
I'm fairly new to woodturning, and although I have a fair number of woodturning tools, I've been sticking with the removable carbide tipped tools, as I'm no good at sharpening normal woodturning chisels. I'd like to be able to use, and sharpen, chisels like a 'proper' woodturner! :sob:

It became apparent quite early on while in Mikes (Johnsons) workshop the other day that the Crown Cryo minature chisels that came with Axminster Precision Pro lathe are not big enough for turning pens. With this in mind and not having the facility in the spare room for grinding equipment I have...
I really don't know where to start as I don't even know how to hold a chisel properly. Is it easier to turn a wooden or acrylic pen to start with. Is it best to round of the edges of the blank first or will the chisels do that. I know this sounds stupid of me. These are the chisels I've got. I...
Hiya I bought a huge pile of small items plus chisels mandrels jaws and chisels about a month back and was wondering what this chucks make and model is? I have about 4 sets of useful work holding jaws but only 1 set of jaw mounts so it is a pain to change jaws with the 8 fiddly screws when i...
I have had a good day, Started by going to the club to watch a great demo by Mark Sanger and finally get to talk in person rather than on the phone or on one of the forums I visit. Then I managed to win the competition with my latest turning then to top it off brought three chisels for £10.
A...
