Done a little bit of jiggling about this morning.
Made a small jig for the drill press.
This jig will keep the blank square and stable whilst drilling.
I hope to put it through it's paces over the weekend.
Feel free to copy it :ciggrin::ciggrin:
Both a first followed by another chuffin mis-hap (nothing new there)
First off I was drilling a hole in a brittle bit of acrylic and next thing it just broke up, I say broke up but exploded is nearer the mark. 12.5mm hole.
This has never happened to me before and I am glad I was wearing a full...
Hi guys, I have been asked to make a pen for a friend and they want it made from resin. When I have been drilling my wood blanks I have noticed that the blank was getting hot and smoking slightly and I am scared that I get a blowout with the resin blank. I have read that you can use a dry lube...
I am sure some of you guys with lots of experience look at some of these posts and think....." Not that question again !!!"
Sorry but I got to ask it again as I have ruined 3 blanks today. I tried drilling a 27/64 hole in resin for a Sierra pen and the holes werer so oversize and oval that I...
Another from the other side of the pond. This is Tru Stone and Aluminum (or Aluminium) depending or you choice of beverage temperatures. :pint:
Constructing the blank was interesting... Drilling the tube hole was very interesting... And the turning was  "successful."
The theme was for...
Hi all,
Braved the cold workshop. The burl wood played up a bit again not allowing the brass tube to enter the blank after drilling. Managed to fir it this time though. Good fun, I love this game.

Hi,
My drill press has very little depth and I'm struggling to get dead centre holes when drilling both sides. Do you have any suggestions?
I saw you can drill on the lathe but not sure where to start as I don't have a chuck, what kind would I need?
Having established the principles of pen-turning, just about....i feel that the one area that needs the most improvement for me is how to drill the blanks most effectively and efficiently, without drilling off-centre, or splitting.
I currently use a drill on a stand but the problem is that it...
Hi, some advice please. I seem to have constant problems drilling Olive blanks, it creates a lot of friction and then burns. Is Olive harder than most woods or do I need to get different drill bits?
Howdy Folk,
Apologies for the newb-ish question, but thought it better to seek your opinions.
When the Mrs bought me a lathe (Jet 1015vs), she included a chuck that was out of stock (axminster clubman sk100).
Since I'll need to be drilling the blanks on the lathe, I've been looking at their...
Just a quick question regarding amalgam. Is this more akin to polyurethane or polyester resin? I got an amalgam blank from Vince at Turners Workshop and when I was drilling it today, the swarf seemed more like polyester to me. My concerns are really about how brittle amalgam is. :thinks:
Had a bit of fun making these blanks one is just the tube dipped in glitter then set in resin the other one is plastic swarf from drilling my patriotic centre bands and set in resin enjoy because I did
I made two more very simple segmented pens with just two 45 deg cuts today I have included some photos of the blanks before turning because of the nature of these blanks they have to be made exactly to the length of the tubes so drilling has to be exactly right dead centre and straight I have...
Made these blanks up this afternoon and turned them both corian and plastic I should have cleaned out the hole after drilling as some of the swarf is showing through the red acrylic the kits are from our dave at Pen Kits - CubeCart
Ive jost posted my first reasonable pen on this forum (many thanks all for your kind words). I really struggled to drill the pen blank centrally through the mid line of the blank. it compromised the final quality of the pen and was very close to having a flat side !. what jigs/methods do any of...
