Right, got the label to stick, painted it with the Mrs best quality, over priced marketing department made it smell expensive nail varnish, cast it in glasscast, final finish with micro mesh and it looks grim, like the surface is hazy? Is it because I’m dry finishing with micromesh and...
Hi all,
Two of Phils Sirocco's dressed also in his Spanish Olive, I must say it turned very easy and quickly but I think that was due to Olive being quite oily/moist.... Not like the dry dusty stuff I have been turning of late....
Still, looks nice with good grain
This would of been a nice pen except for one thing, the pen is too small for the blank!!!
I thought I was making a Zeta and drilled a 9mm hole in the blank, the zeta bushes fitted perfectly in the tube.
When it came to assembly I could push the bits in with absolutely no resistance, I tried...
Hi All,
I have a colleague who has a property in Cyprus, he has bought back some Olive wood for me to make pens with, well if these first two are anything to go by...... Its 500 years old and as dry as a prune, a lot of surface shakes and splits, so sharp tools, slow cuts and a liberal amount of...
Turned this 10” bowl and set the 7.62 cases in this morning now the long wait for the resin to dry then remove the inside just hope it don’t move to much lol
Yep I turned a new pen this weekend much easier than my last pen (haha) anyway here it is

A very plain piece of Lime 7 1/4" x 2 1/2" sprayed black then whilst still wet sprayed with "Silly string", then sprayed with copper to the point of running. Silly string removed once dry. The texture on top was formed with bead boring drills.
Hi all, these are going to Cyprus next week to a very special recipient....(more later). Firstly the wood was sourced from high in the hills in Cyprus from Olive trees of over 100 years old. It's also been stored a while and is quite dry and hard, some further pieces will need stabilising or...
Hi all,
I have a large piece of Elm (i think) which I am trying to turn into a platter. The wood is so dry that my tools, even though they are razor sharp, are just tearing it. What ever cut or scrape i use it is just not working. I have now resorted to wetting the wood in a hope that the...
I thought I would have a go at turning a square dish. It's not quite even though, but for a first effort it's not too bad.
The wood is Elm which I find difficult to work at times. It was very dry as it has been kicking around for a while.
More practising tomorrow and looking forward to...
Hi all,
I have just cast some Acrylic picture embeded pen blanks and can not take the chance of water entering the ends of the tube during polishing. I think Mark mentioned something on this subject a few years ago.I have a 3 wheel buffing system and the relevent waxes.
I would like to know...
Hi all
Not been around lately due to domestic pressures but have made some time
to try improve my skills.
I now have a vacuum and pressure chamber and now
enjoying trying to dry out, stabilize and turn into pens.
I have taken some pictures but photography is not my best
subject :-)
Small hollow form 3" X 4 3/4" with an 1/2" hole sanded inside and out to 400grit then textured on the outside finished with ebonising spray and dry brushed with pink iridescent paint Ok I know it does not look pink
Managed to get in the shed again, happy with the result using a fancy slimline from penkitzandbitz.
Tried wet and dry then micro mesh and though not perfect I think it's better than my first attempt.
I was trawling through facebooks marketplace and came across some logs of a decent size for bowl making. They are White Beam and Lime and best of all FREE!!!
Would appreciate some guidance on how to prepare them for drying. I know they need splitting to remove the pith and layed up to air dry...
Hi Everyone,
My question may appear daft & I accept that but here goes.
I live on west coast of Scotland, about a 10 minute walk to the beach, which Harvey my rescue Coker Spaniel & I visit on a regular basis, Ok enough said :whistling:
Looking on the forum it appears that it is possible to...
First turnings this year a Sumach wood 4"x 2 1/2" Lidded Pot and a 6" x 4 1/4" Pot. Not too bad to turn very soft in the centre need to dry a bit more. Also three pine 4"coasters.
Today started well untill I walk into the house and the wife nearly had a fit she looked up at me to see what appeared to be blood spray all over my hand and face, she quickly said "do you want a plaster" I said "No", if it was blood it would bloody need more than a plaster I think to myself...
