    Found a timber gold mine

When I'm not playing on my lathe, I earn a living as a truck driver, the other day I had the good fortune to have a collection from Sykes Timber in Atherstone ( www.sykestimber.co.uk ). Casually mentioned to the owner that I would love to have an hour to myself in the sheds with a hand saw...

    Cyclone Thuya Burl

This wasn't the easiest to do, and I found finishing it a challenge too it blocked really quickly, and you may notice the crack that was all the way through the blank - but I'm happy with the end piece. Regards Padster

    Rescued from the firewood basket

A friend of mine who is a carpenter had placed this little piece of Bubinga in his firewood basket as such a tiny piece of wood was of no use to him. Lucky I spotted it! Nice simple grain and much better as a pen I think. Yes i know its another shiny pen. I just like shiny things! Another...

    Harder than it looks

Hi all, Sooner or later I was going to try this and so today seemed as good as any to start! As you can see I am attempting a celtic knot ( 'not' being very appropriate) I have about 15 bland Walnut blanks to try with, I am hoping that it won't take that many.... So all started well, with a 1mm...

    Little Idigbo box

As part of a box of various woods I bought there was a 2x2x12" piece of Idigbo. And I found an old, very old, pack of Milliput, having seen others inlay bowls etc. with this thought I'd have a go at it. Practice piece really. As one can see from the photo the Milliput did not mix properly due to...

    Dremel Carving

Wife bought me a Dremel for my birthday so had a quick play with it and knocked this up out of a piece of reclaimed teak. I guess it can be classed as a carving but not in the traditional sense!

    Stainless Ballpoint kit?

I’m not overly fond of the plating on many kits so have any of you seen any stainless steel kits out there? I’m thinking of a one piece twist ballpoint but open to other suggestions.

    Vacuum Chucks

I am looking at making a vacuum chuck. There are not many made in this country and those that are are extremely expensive. I have a few ideas using bearings mounted in wood, long tubes etc.and, no doubt, the odd piece of string here and there. I was wondering if anyone had any experiences of...

    Burr bowl

Well at least the outside is near there had to give it a good soaking with sander sealer as some areas are a little soft. This is a rough turned piece donated by Frederick of this forum. I think I also inherited his camera skills(New computer so getting use to it). I just needed to turn something.

    Triple Delight

This is the first triple Celtic I have made. The hardest part was producing the walnut hexagon on a band saw. Then measuring it to get all six sides to within an acceptable tolerance. And of course holding it on the lathe to give a dead centre hole. I made a piece long enough to give me a...

Thought I would try something different

Last week's efforts. Took some time to do this as I was finding my way as not done much of these designs. The lid is Walnut, the cup I am not too sure of but could be Ash and the finial is from a scrap piece of Oak What I do like about this is that the lid fits properly. Not too tight...
