    It'sa Facebook thing!

Hi all, I have been a member of the institute of Carpenters for about 30+ years and its been a stalwart of 'Good Practice' mentality... Until I spotted this on FB Well I posted a comment 'not best practice on timber cutting'.... 10 mins later a messenger message to say sorry and the post will be...

    Celtic knot

Sorry been absent for awhile, among other reasons workshop too cold in the evening. Anyway this weekend I’ve done my first Celtic knot as a practice, I want to make a matched pair for a friend getting married in April.

    No talent needed!

I always used to call the laser cutter at the school I worked in as the " No talent machine" as it was constantly used for stuff that should be easily accomplished by hand with a bit of practice. I'm still getting to grips with the one I have but I'm sure I couldn't have reproduced the pissy...

    My first pen

Nothing really special but my first so thought I would post it. Made from Beach as I have a lot of this to practice with. I’ve already thought of what I would do differently regarding style etc.

    My first 5 pens

These are my first pens. Have tried experimenting with various shapes and formats. They are shown in the order in which they were turned, with the first one on the left. I think the 1st 2 are better, as need to improve my technique, accuracy and finish on the others. Lots more practice required!!

    My first pens

My first pens, having been woodturning for a while. I made them both out of elm burr. The blue one is a ProKraft Byron and the other is a Beaufort Ink mistral. I’ve applied a CA finish and I need to improve my technique, but I think that will come with practice. Ash

    Has anyone

Just wondering if anyone has turned DENA wood. It must be one of the hardest woods around. If you want to practice sharpening gouges just use this wood. Gouges need plenty of sharpening every couple of minutes.

    A random selection

I'm not much good at photography but my neighbour is. She normally takes wildlife photos but recently got herself a lighting setup and as practice for herself offered to photograph some of my pens.

    Practice, practice, practice

Having taken advice from this forum and after my lesson with Mr mooney, I have spent the last few weeks, practising the art of sharpening a tool properly!!! I put some wood between centres and turned the RPM's up to 3100 (nearly twice the speed I was turning at). The result was some what...

    Hello

Hi everyone, James from Durham here. Just started turning this year and quite interested in pens. Made 3 so far, (all slims) one under instruction, and two on my own. The one under instruction turned out better than the other two, but hopefully with some practice they'll be...

Hi All, I took a little break from a large project I am doing at the moment to try this. It worked quite well but there are a few mistakes which will be ironed out with practice hopefully. Don W

    Hi from Kent

Hi to you all on here, I've just stumbled across this forum and just spent the past couple of hours in fascination thumbing through some of the threads on here. Wow! I've done bits of turning (as a hobby) on and off (mostly off) since the mid 80's. A couple of years back I began to take an...

    Guests

Taking out a strong folding table to work on I discovered this pair have taken up residence. Despite my moving around they stayed. I have taught a couple of Possums to drive after about 20 miles they failed the test, had to practice somewhere else. I have at least ten sheds so I visit this one...

The off cut needed to be a little big bigger to get a nice size ring, but it was good practice. Day in the shed - YouTube

    Back still bad

Well my back will not let me stand for long to do any woodwork of any kind, so I found some modelling ply left over from my days making radio controlled boats. Anyway I thought I would have a play with my new Birthday present and get a little practice in on using it. This is the first result...

    Oak Sleepers

I was wondering if anyone has tried cutting up a railway/garden sleeper to make blanks. Did it work? The one I am looking at is brand new, untreated 4inch x 8 and is 6foot long. The ones I have seen are £30 but I have been told I can get them even cheaper. I have the tools to re-cut down to...
