Hello,
I am looking to make a few pens out of some historic woods. I have one that I just finished using the decking of the USS New Jersey but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for sites in the UK that would sell into the US. I found a couple of site myself but I thought I would ask...
While I am working on the pierced bowl and doing the painting rather than just sitting and watching it do so i thought I would start another project.
This is a vase the top and bottom are not yet glued together as different woods can move at different rates even through the process of just...
Had two left over blanks so rather than one top one bottom cut them all in half, glued
and turned this evening. Few burn marks to match the joints.
It’s a present for my partners son. He started it but got a bit nervous the Xbox was
left alone to long lmao, so I finished it for him.
I would like to incorporate copper/brass /aluminium into my pens and would appreciate guidance on the optimum thickness to use.
The sheeting would be to highlight between two different woods. I would be grateful to know a good source.
Thanks in advance
Alan
For sometime I have been thinking of making some changes for 2019 Craft Fairs. As well as making my normal pens and people saying they like pens with a story. I thought I would go down the line of of doing just that, pens with a story, pens made out of rare or very rare woods. After a month of...
Just finished the American Fire Truck from Toys and Joys plans measures 31" X 7" X 7 1/2" and with the ladder extended in the raised position 36" tall. Main woods Sapele and Beech with others thrown in for good measure.
As we use a CA, wax, melamine to finish our wooden pens and people usually stick a pen in their mouths,
are there woods or even finishes that we shouldn't use?
Dave
I am just wondering if there are any easy woods for first a attempt at pen making, I have seen some zebrano but the read it was quite hard to turn so it got me thinking what wood would be easy to start but still look nice and not to bland?!
Hi, some advice please. I seem to have constant problems drilling Olive blanks, it creates a lot of friction and then burns. Is Olive harder than most woods or do I need to get different drill bits?
After a little sojourn into polymer clay, here are a few Siroccos. Black Chrome in spalted birch, upgrade gold & gunmetal in elm and chrome & gunmetal in bog oak.
Except for my lay up through health problems you may have noticed the lack of projects from me well this is what I have been working on.
The completed Prime mover is now finished. This took longer than expected due to the health problems, but I was not going to give in. I had a rough count and...
The last one I posted sold within a day or so, so I've turned another. This one is made with two tone Ziricote, which is one of my favourite woods. I'm still fairly new to turning, so constructive criticism always welcome.
Four of Phil's (Beaufort Ink) Tempests done today, should have been six but to many interruptions.
Left to right
Gunmetal dressed in black ash
Gold dressed in london plane
Gunmetal dressed in diagonal cut black ash
Gold dressed in london plane burr
All with melamine finish
Never having used it before I bought some Chestnut melamine finish for my pens.
I have now tried it on a couple of "practice" turned pen blanks (not finished pens!) to get the method right. I have failed completely so far. No shine at all on a bubinga blank. I want to switch to melamine...
Hi. I've been using CA for a while now, it's the only finish I've found that adheres to all the woods I use and seems durable. I must say though, I dread the finishing process. The fumes, the 0.5 seconds you have to get the thing coated before it cures, the lost layers of skin from getting my...
I store my bowls etc in a plastic storage box under my stairs not the driest place but not damp some of them are getting a green surface mold :thinks:. I can't under stand why its only one or two I finish them all with the same BLO and they are different woods I have cleaned them off and wax...
