The type of lathes you are looking at aren't true V/S the Axy and warco have set speeds V/S don't you can build the speed up or down to exactly what you want also when the belt starts to ware they get very noisy and many a pulley have broken on those type of speed controls also unless you intend making table legs, stair spindle you don't need all that length the CL3 is a good machine which can be built up  to whatever you want bowls up to 30" I have turned many a 24" bowls / Platter on one but you do have to remember to keep the bearings oiled to convert it to true V/S will cost you another £400 approx
