I rescued a piece of beech from our neighbours fire wood pile just before they moved out, and have had it drying for a couple of months.

They rang to invite us over on Saturday, so I thought something from the old place for the new place would be appropriate.

So here it is. My first attempt at a small bud vase. Not perfect, but I'm happy with the end result.

It was a usefull learning exercise. I had to make a jam chuck with a 12mm dia protrusion to reverse it to finish the bottom.
I also had a couple of catches with the skew, which teach you to take it a bit more carefully. Sometimes I get carried away and forget that I'm very new to makin' shavings :sob:

I had to cut a slice off the wood (by hand, no band saw yet) to make it square-ish, So I have a piece big enough to make a couple of pens with

I'm very pleased with the result of my firewood turning exercise:banana:
