I have acquired a number of 50 caliber cartridge cases I would like to make a couple of pens out of some of them. Anybody done this before any advice would be appreciated.

I make a lot of 50 cals to accept either Parker or Cross style refills for sale at gun shows.

Nice work. Thanks for posting those PDF’s Les, very helpful. Those Hornady bullets with the aluminium tips look very nice.

You didn’t read the instructions:

“Insert the Bullet Tip Assembly into the Casing and Dowel Insert. To Change the Cross refill twist and pull the bullet to remove the Bullet Tip Assembly from the Dowell Insert. Change the refill and push and twist the Bullet Tip Assembly back into the Dowell Insert and check twist operation.”

Or for the Parker refill:

“Insert the Bullet Tip Assembly into the Casing and Dowel Insert. To Change the refill unscrew the bullet Tip counter clockwise and change refill and spring. Reinstall by pushing bullet tip into casing against spring tension and screw in clockwise until transmission engages to retract refill tip. Check double twist action.”

It’s well worth saving those PDF’s.

Were are you sourcing these bullets I have tried every were and no body stocks them. Hornady .510 50 CAL 750 GR A-MAX. ( Advanced Match Accuracy ) with a copper jacket, aluminum tip and a lead core. Failing that can you recomend a full jacketed bullet. Im not keen on the A max for this particular purpose. All though I use them all the time in 6.5x55 and .308 with good results on the range.

I replied earlier......sportsman guns have them £155 for 20, I think that's why they have them.....I bought some Lapau bullets, £55 for 20 fmj from Wilson and Wilson, but with the pending ban on large caliber/energy bullets few people are carrying stock

No way I’d pay prices like that unless I had firm orders for all the pens. I have a metal lathe so for the odd one off it would be easy to turn a bullet from some bronze rod. Not difficult to add the alloy tip but I’d probably go for stainless. Not authentic I know but most would never know the difference.

I have a lot of my shooting buddies interested in purchasing the pens. I also have a metal lathe and a mill so I could turn some my self if need be.

Hoping this finds the forum.
50 cal desk pens using spent shells, turned wood or acrylic offcuts for bullet points, drilled with a 4mm hole through the point and using stadler ballpoint inserts. Bic biro replacements are to long. Brass bolt on the side is to stop the pen rolling off the desk if it falls over.

I still have a stash of 50 caliber cases but I have never been able to find bullets at a price that makes turning them into pens viable. I might have a go with acrylic and see how that goes.
