I made this also today a 14" Dawn Redwood platter the first photos are the platter straight of the lathe with no finish the last photo it has had one coat of teak oil this is one wood I will never buy again my own fault I should have known better it is as light as a feather and as soft as shite but it has a wonderful grain which is what first attracted me to the blank what do you think

I agree - very nice grain Woody I think i would have tried a simple pyro pattern around the rim to try and lift the piece but then i just like things like that!

Don't encourage dad to do pyro work, last time he tried he was working in the bakery at Pudding Lane init?
Good looking bowl dad.

Knot much to add to the comments except brave turning Woody for most of us you succeeded where. I am not familiar with the Dawn part of the name? At that size lighter weight sounds great to me sometimes with our burl etc its a real factor weight in a platter. Swirly and when the other coats go on striking mate.

If it was a pain to turn, the end result is worth the effort.

I think it's great !

Where did you get the blank as it's not one I've come across.

You've done a wonderful job with this Woody, considering the wood issue, and it is a lovely piece my friend ..
