A fountain pen with a “fine” nib

Hey folks I am hoping to tap into the hive-mind here. I have been asked if I can make a fountain pen with “a finer nib” – her words. I have made a few fountain pens (a classic elite and two TM Omegas) she liked the feel of the Omega but wanted a finer nib. So can I just get a separate nib and replace the existing one? Is replacing the nib a straight forward procedure? Or do I get a different kit with a finer nib?

I greatly appreciate any and all comments and help.

P.S. I promise to put some pictures of my pens up soon, my light tent has grown legs so I have ordered a replacement

Yes easily.

But it’s not as easy on every type of kit as the cheaper ones such as the rizheng gent kits can be glued on so won’t change without a bit of pain.

But the TM kits jobs will screw out.

Simple hold the job and turn it anti-clockwise to screw it out.

Make sure you replace the feeder and job ideally as you may have problems with leaking around the feeder

Before doing anything, you should check what she means by "fine". Is it "better quality" or "with a narrower tip"? In both cases, Phil is your friend.

Hi Martin

Most pen kits are supplied with what most western pen users would regard as something approaching a medium nib, although it varies a little from kit manufacturer to manufacturer.

Nibs are generally referred to both by their point width - extra fine, fine, medium and so on, in conjunction with their physical size, which for the majority of pen kits are either size 5 or size 6. Both the Omega and the Classic Elite take a size 5 nib.

If you look on the Beaufort Ink site at size 5 nibs, you'll see that they are available in a choice of different housings

Size 5 Bock Nibs

Any of the Bock size 5 nibs in any point width, in a "kit compatible" housing (from the right hand column on the webpage) will screw straight into an Omega as a direct replacement. As far as the Classic Elite is concerned, unfortunately its nib housing is unique to Rizheng (who are the manufacturer), and are not available as an after market purchase (except complete with a like for like spare nib, which takes you no further forward) - therefore you can swap the nib for a better or different one , but you'll have to fit it into the existing housing that comes with the kit - which can easily be done but takes a little bit of knowledge.

I hope that helps a bit, but just shout if you want to talk it through some more

I tried to attach this to my previous post, but for some reason the system didn't want to play ball. Anyway, this is a guide to the various point widths, which may help to make your decision making process a wee bit easier.
