A Lesson Reinforced.

I have seen ,heard over a long time now the dangers of using drilling machines as sanders etc pushing against the shaft. The morse taper can let go under these circumstances.

I have read so many times of people using drilling machines as a form of lathe etc.

This week my Mill Drill was occupied so I thought in a hurry quick I could simply mill four flats, small in size on relatively soft casting. Yes the morse taper let the chuck and holding shaft go on a heavy no 3 taper. I was so fortunate I suffered no injury. Lesson well learned. This drill of mine is a ripper and a heavy duty one at that.

THe big drill and a closer view of the micro adjustment X Y unit under the vice (weighs in real heavy. This is the unit that released the chuck on me. In the pic rhs the rusty bed of the4 foot sander I( purchased on the same day, rust removed and cleaned up now.

One of my other drills I had the chuck drop and I was lucky it had a hollow quill to the pulley drive so I fitted a new taper insert in the chuck and a locking threaded bar to prevent this happening.

When I bought the 2nd hand drill and sander I confess I never checked the drill quill , I find it is not hollow up to the pulley drive so I will be very careful from now on.

I had that happen to me a couple of times, I put a piece of wood on the chuck and tapped it with a hammer couple of times, no problems since.

I did give it an uppercut if it ever happens again I will seek out a reamer and make sure of a great fit.

My problem started when I was removing the chuck to use on the wood lathe. Since getting a couple more chucks and giving the required taps no problem.

I have done a lot of work with the drill since I bought it with no probs. When I went to the garage sale it turned out to be at a very long term mates house who is a creative gunsmith and extraordinary machinist.

This mate has installed a large C and C unit his son is also very gifted in machining. There is no casual conversation when we get together it is full on with me soaking up the knowledge.
