Hi, Guys,

The other day I cleared out some rotting planks from the back of my shed and gave them to my mate for his woodburner. One plank was so heavy (and less rotted than the others) and we both remarked on its weight. Yesterday he gave me a pen blank he'd cut from this piece, and even this small the weight was far above any blank of a similar size. Anyway, today I made a Jnr Gents roller from it. I was surprised at how coarse-grained it finished, so used 6 coats of BLO and CA to seal and polish. Seems to have done the trick. I reckon it's Brazilian mahogany - what do you guys think?

Bob.

Dont know where you got the wood from Bob, but if you were pattern maker then theres a chance it could be true mahogany, but I doubt it on two fronts. Bazilian Mahogany is actually lighter than American Oak, and significantly lighter than English Oak. Brazilian or Honduran Mahogany has very little pattern and is very bland as a wood. Your piece seems to have rather more character than I would have expected from true mahogany. Having said that I havent a clue either but if its heavy then its probably not padauk which is not unduly heavy, could be a light coloured piece of Merbau but could be one of hundreds. If you want a better steer, get a bigger squared off lump and weigh it.

Hi, Terry, I've got just one stick of paduak but it's light compared to my remaining piece.

Hi, Grump, I reckon you've cracked it, matey!

Hi, ...And so have you, Pauley!

LOL!

Thanks for all your comments, guys!

Hello, Neil,

I can always expect a sane and considered answer from you, mate - unlike some of these geezers (who should be confined to a lunatic asylum for life!) LOL!

Thanks!

Bob.
