A new wood to me

I got some pen blanks from our lignaterrae ( Dave) it is for my collection I have never turned this wood before and I must say it is so easy to tuen and with a excellent finish of the tool and it takes a good finish this blank has two contrasting colours it is a different colour each side maybe heart and sap wood

I hadn't realised it's a competion, so if it's something Woody has never turned before, it must be something from another planet, may be Martian elm, whatever it is, it's a terrific looking pen, with nicely contrasting colours.

Very nice thought it was steamed beech at first

I thought it might be Rewa Rewa from NZ. It has a flecked grain like it. Lovely pen Woody.

Bill, that's a hell of a good shout. Despite occurring on different continents Rewa-rewa from NZ (Knightia excelsa) and Chilean Fire Tree (Embothrium coccinium) are closely related and the woods share a visual kinship. Both are in the Protea family.
Both are huge rarities, the Chilean stuff came from an arboretum tree in Manchester. I know, it kinda kills the magic...

Ooooh I like that !

Interesting wood, looks like a cross between London plane and masur birch with that figuring, and a cracking colour ot boot.

What's not to like.
