I received an order from Dan today and in it was a kit to try which was very nice of him. I'll try to give as honest and accurate an appraisal as possible.

1. Tubes. These are the same size as slimline tubes in wall thickness, diameter and length and there was no apparent difference in the quality of brass.

2. Top Cap. This is a fancy cap that is something the slimline world has been waiting for in far as its different to the same old plain one we've been using for a long time. It has a pattern that stands out from the black background and is quite sharp in its features which is pleasing to my eye. On top of the patterned area is another few mill with rings on it that I would prefer if it wasn't there because it makes the top very tall.

3. Clip. I love this, its a different shape to any I've seen before and has a small wheel at the end which is quite novel. I don't know how sturdy it is and the test of time may see it falling off but it does seem to be a good fit at the moment.

4. Centre Band. This would look better if it had the same pattern as the top of the pen and it would be nice if it came in slimline and streamline sizes because I think both would sell well. I changed the cb in one of my pics to a more fancy one but that doesn't go either and makes it look like there are 3 disparate parts to the pen.

5. Nib. A totally different shape to what I've seen before and I like it. the diameter at the point where it meets the wood is less than a normal slimline and I've left it turned at the size of a slimline so that Dan can see. I'll rectify it tomorrow. The diameter of the nib that fits into the tube is too small and can be inserted and pulled out easily by hand.

6. Overall. I like it and it goes a long way to becoming another arrow in the quiver.

Thanks Dan.

6. Lenth. Overall it is about 2-3mm longer than a slimline.

Hmmm, not sure about the end cap, it looks out of place to me and too tall. If it was shortened to the top of the floral band and the floral band was replicated at the centre band it would look better, but I'm not convinced about the shape of the nib either. :thinks: that said the turning is lovely and the choice of wood looks great.

Im only going to comment on the kit as your workmanship is spot on as always
The kit sure is different and to be honest I think the finial is to tall c/b needs to match the finial pattern the wheel is an old idea that didnt catch on before Brian & Eamonn will remember them also they dont last to long and they mark the wood and bend over sideways but I do like the nib sorry

I think having the nib such a small diameter could present problems as the wood is already only 0.5mm thick at standard diameter. The nib style is very traditional - matches the styling on the finial nicely. Nice turning and finishing as always, Paul.

I quite like the idea of the slightly smaller nib, given my habit of over-turning the ends, but I share the concern about the wood being too thin at that point. I pretty much agree with everything that has been said.

Not sure if removing the extra bands on the finial would leave the proportions looking wrong though?

I do like the clip and if it is sturdy enough not to fall off then I would buy the clips if available. I am not keen on the finial it looks out of place being too tall, the nib is strange and if the CB was a patterned streamline one it would look better. I would probably buy one just to see the clip, but I can't imagine buying more.

The clip is the same style as the virage, the original omega, I've not had an issue with any returns on that pen, the roller seems to have worked. A victotian styling that I don't like, the nib lends itself to a straight barrelled pen and as a perfectly flat pen I think the concerns over the length of the finial might disappear. Don't think it will be a big seller so on this one I'm out.

I think there are aspects of the kit that are worth working on Dan and maybe make 2 kits up. The nib and centreband with a similar finial and clip would be good. Also I like the finial and if the cb and nib matched it would be a cracker especially as Neil suggested and turned to the size of the bushes.

As Paul says, there appears to be aspects of the kit which could work with modifications :thinks:
But going by the reaction so far I can't see it selling well

Paul, is there any chance of you measuring the wheel on the clip and giving close dimensions?

Not keen at all on the kit, the wood and turning is equal to your past pens my friend..
