Hi all,

I'm about to turn my first acrylic, I've painted the inside of the drilled holes as Phil advised. I have bought micro mesh and will use them up to their highest grit as the finish. Before I start, is there anything else I should consider? I want to turn it slim, but wonder if this blank would be better a little bulbous on the Mistral pencil kit?

Any advice is appreciated guys :-)

Cheers
Dougie

I do pretty much the same.... If a blank is slightly translucent I paint the drilled hole a complementry colour.... I still use Gorilla glue to fix the tubes and haven't had any fail yet. As to shape, if you have taken good care of the translucency then it shouldn't be a worry..... :praying::praying:

Thanks that's all I needed to hear. One shall now crack on and upload the results later, whether it be success or fail ;-)

Just take it slow and heat is not good for Acrylic it can interfere with the glue bond and in the finishing (sanding) heat can make the acrylic act like shrink wrap (it's happened to me) trying to get a high gloss finish on the blank

Thanks for the advice James. I'm thinking of using micromesh with water to keep the heat down. What speed would you recommend both dry and wet sanding?

I only wet sand when I use micro mesh. You will get a better sanding if you keep the speed down about 1100 rpm to 1500 rpm add a bit of washing up liquid to water it will cut down on clogging up your sand paper.

take your time and enjoy the journey

Ha perfect, that is exactly what I did, and it turned out pretty well. Will upload a pic now.
