I have grey and maroon non woven sanding pads, 0000 wire wool and Alox up to 1000 grit, is this good enough for finishing acrylic? I've spent enough recently so don't really want to buy anything else unless I really have to. I think some burnishing cream might be required but is anything available locally likely to be suitable? I have a Halfords just up the road so wondering if something like this may save me some postage.

Feel free to explain your own process for finishing and add links to exceptional products. Thanks.

Go to your bathroom and grab the toothpaste, as good as burnishing cream for plastic init?
Make a paste from talc that will give a real extra fine gloss.

Brasso, Silvo and even the poundland scratch polish for automotive paint will give a high gloss finish. If you have any buffing compounds they will also work I use P175 compound for plastics that is superb it has Cut factor 1 Gloss Factor 9.5. Mostly I use Silvo for a very high gloss.

I sand radially and laterally on the lathe with 400 grit only.
Clean with a Tack Cloth.
Buff on the lathe radially and laterally with Extra Fine Steel wool which is equivalent to #000/0000.
Clean with a Tack Cloth.
Apply Hut Ultra Gloss.
Polish on the lathe with a piece of lambs wool.
This gets me a 40X Loupe scratch free finish.
Much better than Micro Mesh.
Works great for me.

Les

I sand to 600 then use Farecla profile 200, 300 and 500 they're not expensive and give a deep shine

i have started to do the same, except that I don't use the 200. it is so straightforward that i now prefer to make acrylic pens than wooden ones.

William heaps of ideas so far I have a few to make Snake Skin blanks, Circuit board blanks etc in with so many tasks. I have a real arsenal of products including all that has been said.

In all the years of making Les from Canada creates his own blanks keeps to simple proceedures and his results are there in his pic today. There are so many variations in cast blanks but they all require care. Have fun with yours.

Everyone has there own methods brasso is cheap I have also used autosol and finished with some automotive product and canuba wax Grumps method would be just as effective as effectively you are doing the same thing i.e using a compound with light grit in it init. I also have Farecla 300 and 500 but have not used it yet but when I fully retire sometime this year when I have more time I intend to do a video with all the methods when I learn a bit more about Premier elements and Canon D70's
