I tend to use cellulose sanding sealer followed by a finishing wax buffed on the lathe with kitchen towel. If it was for food use I would use an oil finish that is listed as food safe.

P.S. the finishing wax I got at a local hardware shop.

For the fruit bowls I have made I tend to use lemon oil. Has more of a satin finish but smells beautiful.

as others have said i use cellulose standing sealer first cut back with 0000 grade wire wool then Briwax or you could use woodwax 22 or micro crystalline wax buffed up with paper towel (i prefer to use and industrial type paper towel as they are a bit stronger than ordinary kitchen towel) or use pure cotton rags. if the piece will be used for food then food safe finish.

Come and raid my shed, I have finishes from the ark.
More than I can shake a stick at and never use em.
Our pound shop has spray can of teak oil buy 5 of them for a start.
You don't need lots of expensive stuff.
A drop of turps, a bit of beeswax and some oil does all you will ever need to finish a log.

I use cellulose sanding sealer and the finish depends on what it going on and what it is to be used for.
Got foodsafe, friction polish, Danish oil, linseed oil and a couple of others
