I think, and I stand to be corrected ..

In the case of Acrylic blanks, means its a form of plastic. I suspect it covers all forms of resin.

Thanks. I was specifically wondering if I bought "cast acrylic rod" what I might be actually buying.

Cast acrylic rod is exactly that. You can also buy extruded rod which has slightly different properties, Semi-finished sheet, rod and tube form it's a generic name and there are a number of manufacturers best known in the UK is ICI "Perspex", the US version being "Plexiglass" and there are others from the far east and Europe.

I was wondering about using it for a kitless pen as an alternative to ebonite which isn't the easiest if stuff to source. It needs to be able to take a thread and for that thread to be reasonably durable.

You're right in choosing cast rather than extruded then Mark. It's a bit harder and much better clarity. Will definitely take a thread but has to be treated with care as it's brittle.
I have a lump somewhere from many moons ago where I drilled and tapped a number of holes. It's clear so can be seen in detail. I'll try to dig it out and take a pic.

I'm sure that Vince at Turners Workshop has ebonite. Here 'yar Ebonite / Hard Rubber
