Only way i have tried is with water decal paper before finishing a pen I used the clear paper one and it worked out not bad, it was only a trial on a pen for my Grandson in Canada for a Xmas present, It can be easy or hard as far as i can see.
You need to take your time but it's quite effective! I got the paper stuff from ebay!
