As you'll know (from all the stupid questions) that I'm getting my act together with tools and equipment ready to start pen making.
I have an Irish friend and wanted to turn a Bog Oak pen for him as an early project.

I don't know the first thing about Bog Oak. But I woudl like to turn some really old wood if it can be had.

Also, can anyone tell me if it's tricky to turn and finish?
I like a thin finish, so you can see and feel the grain.

No problems turning this material for me ever, be careful to get a dry ,sound piece or blanks. Finishing is always a personal choice.

The quality of it can vary wildly, I've got a load of offcuts that need stabilising and some blanks that are rock hard.

A few recent ones I acquired from Dan/Alex through British Made Pen Kits (BMPK) and they are rock solid pieces. You'll need to sharpen your tools before (as we all should) and during, but they most definitely won't splinter and fall apart the first time you show them a tool like some other pieces I've seen.

I do a lot of Irish Oak Bog wood if I can get hold of it. Have you got a piece already or would you like me to send you a piece,just let me know
what kit you are going to use.I don't think you will have any trouble turning it I'm here to help.

I'm not sure which kit I'll use yet. It's all very new to me still.
I pick up the lathe this week, chisels being made, need to organize my work area and extraction.

So, I don't have any Bog Oak in yet.

Perhaps I could buy a piece off you if you have some spare....
