A friend has been pushing me for a while to make a car related pen for his 20 year old car mad / car salesman son. The only one I can find is the shock absorber kit which doesn't appeal to me much though he'll probably like it Has anyone tried one of these or are there other kits available in the UK that I should be looking at?

I tried a shock absorber kit many years ago and hated it. cheap nasty thing looked like a novelty out of a seaside machine.
I also did a spark plug pen which came in the same category, there are those who like the tacky stuff but I don't go for them.
As above why not do the decal thing that was a craze a short while ago?

Geordie. .??:funny:

That's a thought Brian. Might give that a go and see what it looks like. His dad is an American muscle car nut. He owns one of the general lee cars in mint condition.

I thought the shock absorber kits might be tat and not especially cheap at £11.

I've tried to make one from a real spark plug, but the core is too hard and brittle to drill. How about asking our David (Jimjam) to see if he can sort an inlay one out?

Now that's an idea Brody:thinks: whilst a real spark plug might not be possible, it wouldn't be difficult for me to turn and carve a detailed spark plug in box or lime. Will think on that one.
How did you visualise the mechanism working? We're you thinking twist pen or making a cap to fit? I'd be very interested in your ideas.

If you're reading this thread David, is there an inlay design available? Ideally an American or prestige motor.

It wasn't a cast one ... I just turned a bit of acrylic below the bushing ... stuck the stamps on ... loads of coats of thick CA .... I mean loads of coats 15 -20 coats

Never thought of that. Got hundreds of stamps from my childhood so will try that as nothing to lose. Appreciate the advice:thumbs:

Bob do you have a laser or inkjet printer?

When Charly was here last week she did a pic for a sign on my shed "Beware of the Grump" using this method.
Can't show cos it all fell off when it dried out, something was wrong dunno what but maybe cos I have laser printer.

I made a shock absorber pen for a mechanic friend who did me a favour. He loved it but I haven't bought any more due to the price.

My printer is an inkjet Brian so will probably work but you haven't half brought back some distant memories:thumbs:

Along, long time ago I was involved with an American company called Binney & Smith who make Crayola crayons and Liquitex acrylic paint so I had quite a few samples and it just so happens that there are both matt and gloss gel among them. I know where they are though possibly dried out - hope not.

One of our tricks was similar to that video except never tried a printer, we used magazine pics and the results were pretty good.

As an aside, we had an industrial waste product which we called "sillyputty" and marketed it in a plastic egg. Amazing stuff, just like plastic putty, pink and could stretch it, bounce it and transfer print on to it. Never managed to sell in large volume as it was too expensive but the kids loved it

edit: Just googled and they still sell it. There are diy instructions on line as well
