Ray has given sound advice, as usual. If these checks don't cure the problem then have a look to ensure that the cartridge piercers are in place. Of course they should be, but maybe there was a cock-up at the factory and a batch has gone out with a defect in them. Most likely fault will be that the inks in the cartridges have dried, and Ray has covered that.
