With this Alligator skin pattern is called XYLA the timber comes from a narrow deciduous strip between Laos and Cambodia. Getting hard to find. Open grained.

Peter.

Damn shame you had to give up turning Vic, I used to turn, make walking sticks and engrave glass, I stopped the lot due to breathing being very difficult, I blame the dust, asthma don't help. But seeing some of the clever pens people make on utube has got me on them. My son was making them and gave me a mandrel and some pen kits. I knocked out twenty one slimline ones but because I did not like the wasp wasted look when using the provided bands, I added bands made from other stuff to get a more cigar shape. Must admit the segmented ones appeal to me a lot. The one you had on here recently was superb, but I cannot find it again.
Son took the huff as my pens, he says, are better than his! Just cannot do right for doing wrong!

Beautiful Pen Peter. The finish you have achieved is stunning and what a lovely looking piece of timber. You really do have some great looking timber down under
