This morning I had a go at a Beefwood blank kindly sent to me by Peter (Penpal) it's from the Northern Territory, Australia. Some very nice grain pattern & colour, reminds me somewhat of our London Plane.

The pen is a Taylors Mirfield (Dan) Alpha in rhodium with the rollerball option. :thinks:

The blank is finished with Hampshire Sheen from Martin Saban-Smith which shows of the grain very nicely with a very good shine

It may look alright in the photo but turning wise not one of my best efforts :sob: it won't be going on sale :sob: I will carry it round & use it myself to test out how Martin's Hampshire Sheen stands up to daily handling.

is it a gloss finish, as the pictures seem to show?

It is Mark, first time i've used Martin's Hampshire Sheen, certainly comes up well its got quite a high shine to in, certainly more so than just microcrystalline, I'm going to use it myself to see how it reacts to everyday handling, I do expect it to lose some shine as with all wax based finishes but hopefully I will be able to recover some of it by giving it a coating of wax & a polish every now and again.

Beaut carry Pen Billy you have to try hard to fault the pen.

Peter.

Its a great shame Peter, the blank looks great, I should have noticed the problem before I put it together, I may have been able to rescue it, still I will enjoy carrying it & using it myself.

A very nice timber Peter thanks for sending it to me, I will keep any eye out for more :thinks:
