I know this is probably sacrilege, but I am hoping to find a fountain pen kit for a friend that is not quite as bulky as the Omega. I know I will have difficulty finding a kit that comes up to the same standard as those that Dan supply at that sort of price. But any recommendations and what to keep well away from would be much appreciated. Preferably available in the UK. Also preferably able to take a Bock nib unit.

About the only other kit of any quality that is more slender is the Baron (available from turners retreat or a pale imitation from timberbits) Its finished size is about 12mm and it will take a size 5 Bock. There is also the Sedona which is effectively a Baron with different looking fittings.

About the most slender is the Artisan from Axminster, with a finished size of just over 11mm, but its quality is way behind and its designers ran out of inspiration when it came to the cap, and consequently it doesn't have a centre band, which for me is a complete no-no. The Sedona and the Artisan will both also take a size 5 Bock.

Thank's Phil. I think I will have to get a couple and see how they turn out. It started when this friend asked about repairing an old Conway Stewart he has by turning a new barrel. However I doubt that would be straight forward. I was going to suggest a similar style pen for hm but using one of the Conway Stewart blanks. Just seemed most of the kits I could find were, as you say, like holding a fat cigar!

I have made a number of Baron fountain pens for friends and they have always gone down well. I also write with a Baron fountain quite often and it feels pretty good to write with. Never tried with a Bock nib which would probabaly be even better. The kit from TR is pretty nice and they keep spares. The Omega is a better kit in my opinion but I have not written with one yet ( still got to make that one up sometime)

The Omega is a very nice kit Allen. I have done a few now in roller and fountain and they write very well. The main comments I get seem to be how bulky they are compared to a fountain pen they may be used to. Personally, I like them. I quite like Turners Retreat, I attended a course at their place a few months back. Very helpful people with a nicely stocked showroom. Could spend lots of time/money in there quite easily.

That pretty much sums it up.
