i get mine from Vince also(Turnersworkshop) - the last time i dropped by he mentioned he had some on order that was three weeks ago -i'll drop him a line and ask for an update. he did mention that one of his suppliers was expecting him to buy a rediculous large amount of wood at one go - I can't remember how much but it made me wince at the time. I'll check and keep you informed.

With all the other amazing woods about I couldn't justify paying that much for a pen blank

I spent an enjoyable hour or so with Vince this morning and came out with my wallet a lot lighter but enough goodies to last me quite a while.

What a great guy who can't do enough to help and advise and he carries a wide range of stuff. He isn't the easiest to catch but for anyone within reach it's well worth the visit.

It's always worth an email re stock position btw, even if showing none as he has stocks changing regularly.

Amboyna covers a multitude of burl timber in Golden and Red colour from heaps of different trees around the world. Having had a lot of Amboyna from many sources two things I look for one timber that has not been laquered or waxed all round, the sizes ie true length and square size. One time when it was new and scarce I paid twenty one dollars US for a stick each 240 mm by 22 mm square thought that was OK. Some colour is flame and rarer the cost reflects this. Desirable is with sap wood especially if the sap wood has character as well.

I can rarely say what is good buying except recently in the UK ie the Snakewood on the forum was the best quality grain I have seen so you pay on the basis of what its worth to you. Noting the prices sold for pens from time to time if you buy premium timber and use premium kits its all relative IMHO.

Peter.

Well I paid about £3.00-£3.50 which is the same as what he wants for 5

Eh? £3.50 for 5?? Dont think so or have I read it wrong?

Its beautiful to Woodturners but then we're not buying the finished articles. I have had this stuff on the stand and people bought a bit of brown oak in preference
