Has anyone used Anco root for pen blanks and if so what is your opinion/ experience with it?

After much searching all I have found is Anco root is sold in pet shops for animals to chew and helps sharpen and clean their teeth. Since pet shops are also a source of Antler pieces for animals to chew I would suggest you bite the bullet and make a pen from Anco Root it looks interesting.

Peter.

Yes it does look interesting indeed. On another forum someone came up with this for me:

Erica arborea (tree heath) is a species of flowering plant (angiosperms) in the heather family, Ericaceae. There are disjunct populations in Africa including the Ethiopian Highlands, the mountains of Ruwenzori and the Cameroon Mountains. In Africa it is normally referred to as giant heather. It is native to the maquis shrublands surrounding the Mediterranean Basin north to Bulgaria and west to Portugal and the Canary and Madeira Islands. Naturalised populations occur in south-eastern Australia.[1]

The wood, known as briar root (French: bruyère), is extremely hard and heat-resistant, and is used for making smoking pipes.

Apparently Anco is a trade name for it.
At least if I do bite the bullet I won't get a splinter!

A new one to me.:thinks:
Yes, a friend bought a large one of these for her dog Maisy but Maisy wouldn't use it and so before she threw it away she asked me if it was any use for pen making.

Post it even it doesn't look half decent Derek - then we'll all know. If it's the same briarwood that is used in pipes, it'll look way better than half decent I would think.

I think that with would rather depend on me, not the wood haha.
