I managed to get on the lathe today-first time for months. I was making a small bowl and had done the outside and reversed the bowl to tackle the inside. When I was tightening up the chuck I burst the spigot on the bottom. Cursing my luck I was going to throw it away when I remembered I'd bought a set of Coles jaws last year. Altering the chuck I remounted the bowl and was pleasantly surprised that it worked a treat so problem solved. The only drawback is the amount of time changing the chuck jaws so I'll look for a cheap chuck now to leave the Cole jaws permanently set up. Any suggestions?

You might not like my suggestion Keith as it is a costly one. I got myself a vacuum chuck a couple of weeks back. I wish I had got one years ago. I find it so versatile.

It is worth having a few chucks about the workshop Keith .. Keep an eye out on ebay for a second hand one, or as Vic says, go for the vacuum chuck ..

Dont buy a chuck because you bust a spigot - Just dont bust the spigot - cole jaws are for finishing not for starting?

Keith good luck with it mate, I have probably 8 or 9 chucks not counting the Jacobs and collet chucks of which there are many more.
One has the cole jaws on permanently as you suggest, works for me as I can leave a piece in a chuck to finish later while using other chucks for different projects.
Yes it's expensive to start with but pays dividends when you have a lot to do, mine now have a zero value to them as they have all paid for themselves many times over.
While a vacuum chuck is without doubt useful you cant' leave work on it and do something else on the same lathe.
Horses and courses again init?

Sorry Brian that sounds like buying chucks to compensate for time management? - A sales mans delight - It takes a few minutes to change jaws it's just the can't be ar*sed syndrome

Sorry that was about working safely - just my opinion but I feel chuck jaws are safer than cole jaws but you can use a sticking plaster for me i know i wont be sat next to you in A&E!

Take a guess
I bought the Versa chuck to speed up jaw changing, just scroll one set of jaws out & another back in, only one chuck needed & a few sets of jaw carriers.

Have a look around the net mate there are so many ways to overcome this problem they tumble out at demos I remember for finishing the bottoms of bowls a guy used a cut off funnel and foam plastic in some fashion it looked outrageous at the time but we all tried it out and it worked a treat. Those Cole jaws get iffy if you are not ultra careful they dont half give you a serve when they hit or let go. The real old timers used very simple methods without fancy chucks glue bases etc. Have success mate.
