What is a dip pen. I have seen this mentioned several times on the forum. Im curious to know what the term dip pen means. Or does it just mean you dip the pen into an ink bottle as opposed to using a refill.

It is an old fashioned pen Dave a follow on from the quill. It gets it name from the fact you "dip" the pen into an inkwell and the nib of the pen acts as a small resevoir to hold the ink. Not an easy pen to use you need lots of blotting paper around.

You are obviously not old enough but the dip pen was what I and many others had to use in our early school days

Looks good to me & yes I remember inkwells in the desks at school but think I am to young to have actually used them, not something I have a memory of although I did use a refill type pen & blotting paper lol
How is the pen made then as I am guessing this isn't a kit, how do you fit the nib for one thing ??

Hi Martin, you are right in thinking that it is not a kit pen. However it is actually made up by utilising parts from a Slimline. The body is made up by using slimline tubes in either end of the pen body halves and the twist mechanism holds the two halves of the pen together and include a slimline centre band. A slimline end cap is used at the one end and to fit the nib you just use nib ferrules that push into the nib end tube

A million memories for me as a former ink monitor whose task was to mix the ink from powder. Shades of a forest of these pens stuck in ceilings everywhere. Quite a deadly weapon also.Fountain pen ink blots and white shirts ruined also.Indelible pencils were legal to use for those precious documents IE my birth certificate in 1934 etc.

Hi George, there are plenty of places in the UK that sell them if you Google it.

Don't buy any nibs if you want any yet as I am waiting for a job lot and will have a fair few spares available

Thanks for the explanation Vic, I knew that you had used a slimline cenre band but never realised you used most of the rest of the kit, didn't expect it to have brass tubes for one thing lol, not knowing that such a thing as nib ferrules existed I thought the nib may have to be bonded on in some way. Learning quite a lot from the forum even without asking questions lol

and white shirts ruined Oh yes Peter, I had forgotten about the leaky pen in the pocket problem, thanks for reminding me lol, you forgot to mention the flicking of ink at other students lol
