Morning. I've been a member of the forum for quite some time but this is my first post.

I picked up a vintage portass mini metal lathe a couple of months ago, I'm still in the process of making space for it in the shed and getting it working with an old sewing machine motor for now.

I turned my first pen in school many MANY years ago back in the 90s and then my second pen around 2019.

I bought a couple of kits for Christmas and once the lathe is setup I'm hoping to start doing this again from February (promise to eventually share photos)

I have a couple of colourful blanks that I'm really looking forwards to trying out.

Welcome to the active side!
'Colourful' blanks sound interesting!
Don't go back to hide in the shadows, not now you have my interest 😉

Thank you for the welcome folks.

Colourful blanks= alumilite and various wood burl cut offs that were turned in to pen blanks.

I also have a few simple wooden blanks to practice on before I start using the posh ones.

Unfortunately it'll be a little while before I can finish making space in the shed but I'll get there eventually. Its a fun activity and a nice way to spend time away from the computer when I'm not working.

Welcome along, but your comment about MANY years ago and then say in the 90's will probably upset many of us that were at school way before then :shocking::rolling:

Never the less, welcome along and look forward to seeing your first pens.

Hello Mehul - welcome into the sunlight from lurking in the shadows. I'm pretty sure that a lot of people would be interested in seeing your Portass lathe, and the motor conversion you have in mind. If you feel like sharing some photos of the process as you progress, that would be amazing!!

Definitely, I'll get some photos on the next dry weekend when I'm working out there. Still a pile of moving boxes to get rid of before I can setup a small workbench area.

Thought I'd try to share a photos of the fun toys. As you can see it's far from being ready to go just yet but I've just started searching everywhere for a mt0 live center.

You might want to start a new thread with these photos Mehul. I'm sure laods of foks would love to see them, but they're less likely to be spotted as they're in your original introductory thread.

Good plan. I'll do that this evening along with some new photos I took today.
