This is the first pen I have had to make my own tube, I say make but really mean I cut off the tube from a 12" tube.
Went back to CA finish with this one, I have managed to make a ripple effect
I know exactly how it happened. Let me explain.
Sanded it down to 6oo grit and no sign of turning (the radial marks) were on it,
Used some burnishing cream and buffed, Used some CA that I applied to a soft cloth and went from left to right then back again and moved away, I let the lathe continue running.
I checked the blank and no ripples were showing so restarted the lathe and buffed for 30 seconds.
Added 2nd layer of burnishing cream and buffed, stopped lathe and all looked good.
Now this is where it went wrong.
Switched the lathe on and applied 2nd coat of CA, This time I applied it directly onto the blank with a cloth under it, the nozzle of the CA was in full contact with the blank, I went backwards and forwards until I could see it was fully covered. I let the lathe run for a couple of mins and buffed with a soft cloth.
With the lathe still running I applied 3rd layer of burnishing cream followed by 3rd layer of CA that I applied the same way as the 1st layer, I did this without checking the results of the previous layers so I ended up covering the ripple effect caused by trying something different on the application on the 2nd layers.
Layers 1 and 3 were fine, I should not allow the nozzle of the CA to make contact with the blank and if applying CA directly to the blank the cloth needs to be in contact with the blank directly underneath where I am applying it and constantly move it left to right and back again. The other thing was I did not check the result of layer 2 after it was applied I just jumped into getting layer 3 done.
These are things that I know and my haste came back and bit me, big big (yes 2 bigs) lessons learnt again
