Will try a piece in the oven Paul. Frank I have some meranti and its not like this. The blank has a purple hue to it and when drilled has purple dust, when I sanded part of it on the disc sander it went dark purple. :thinks: :thinks: :thinks:

Damned if I know, still learning. I know a few more than I used to. I would have called this a generic mahogany many years gone by. Now I bow to those who know better. If it is Meranti I wonder if it has been stained??

Purple heart can go brownish, and its the only wood I've come across that gives bright purple shavings or dust. Did it have a strange bitter like smell when you worked it? That could indicate it's p/heart. Nasty stuff, don't breathe in the dust.

What I do know is never leave it in the oven and forgot about it, it turns blackish.:funny::funny::funny::funny: Peter its a normal weight, not monkey puzzle as M8 is turning some of that at the moment, def not that.
