I’ve been scratching my head on how to best cut a cable hole/slot in the back of this unit on my boat. It’s underneath the gunwale and there’s a 6in height gap and 4.5in to the back of the unit under the gunwale. I was thinking an angle drill with a hole saw to fit one of those desk type cable grommets, but I had a look at one in Homebase and I reckon that, with a hole saw in the chuck, it’ll need near to 7in to get it under the gunwale. If anyone has any ideas on how best to do this without making a mess of it I’d love to hear. Many thanks in advance :thinks::thumbs:

Use an angle chuck with a shortened drill bit in the hole saw, just popping out enough to give Center control.

I have a small angle chuck that I’m sure doesn’t need that much room tho. :thinks:

Thanks Eammon, if one of those will fit that would be great. I’ve seen them on eBay but thought they looked even bigger than an angle drill. :thinks:

That grinder attachment looks a great idea, assuming you already have a grinder but as said you would have to be careful when it breaks though because of the speed. I have a Bosh 7.2v angle drill / driver which I bought 10 years ago specifically for kitchen fitting, excellent in a 300 w cupboard. It cost me about £90 but I think there are cheap ones around now and it's pretty powerful, battery lasts for ages and one of the most useful drills I have in the workshop.

The problem being before I had to pack up work due to health problems I spent 25 years repairing plant from small drills up to large excavators and have seen some bad practices and also end results of silly people. Some of them make you cringe.

I like the first item, that might be small enough to get under the gunwale with a hole saw attached. A trip to Screwfix is in order I think to check it out, thanks for showing :thumbs:

That is what I was saying to Eamonn.

You obviously don't have room underneath to get to it with a drill angle or otherwise but what room do you have if any so that it may open another opportunity to produce the hole required

Been there done that, many happy hour sorting out the D8, just made sure we didn't stop the engine just in case the donkey engine didn't start..:funny:

But yep, seen many a nightmare of tool repairs..

And some are just beyond belief. Was called to a site with complaint that the engine would not start arrived on site "where is the starting handle" reply "we lost it" yep not surprised they could not start it up to ankles in mud and poring down. just part of the norm

Hi Phil, the hole or slot needs to be at the back of the unit about 6in under the gunwale so the conundrum is how to get a tool in to cut a clean hole. A plunge saw, if it’s what I’m thinking of, would have to be held at an angle?
