Only really matters if you radius the bridge as well, I'd go for flat if its your first then you don't have the complication of having to bend the frets as well.

That can be really tricky.

i will be making bridge and nut from some antler
it is my first and last so just wanted to get it right first go
i have made the neck from oak and cut a 7mm fret board from summit wood...that was a task by hand
i have shaped the neck by hand with spokeshave
and will hand sand

this build is all hand work instead of power tools
i could not work out how to make a radius block for the fret

Steve, the best technique I've seen for making a radius block is to pin two carefully-sized strips either edge of your sanding block, then put a sheet of 3mm ply on top. Pull the centre of the ply down onto the sanding block with CSK screws and the ply will naturally curve outwards to the edge strips. Sounds easy but I've never done it ...

No you don't need a radius neck, I would say the vast majority of home builds don't and neither do the stick dulcimers. Chickenbone John doesn't put any on his and I haven't on mine......you don't even need fret wires......I myself prefer them though :winking:

thanks Nige

I have not a clue of anyhing musical
my next door neighbor asked if i could make one about a year ago
i thought i might give it a go
i was given a broken electric guitar that i will butcher for a few bits
it has 3 pickups and a switch
i may see if i could re-wire to use a pair of them for tone and volume and dump the switch
i think a bit ott for a 3 string
i dont like the white plastic cover on them so will see if i can make some wood covers for them
the fretting part looks a lot of work but as it is a one off , i may as well try
i will just turn some acrylic pen blanks down for markers
got any pics of yours ?

No Steve, I never took any.
Mine played ok but I built them how all the You Tube vids say to do, using cast off components and threaded bar or bolts. I then discovered mountain dulcimers/stick dulcimers and much preferred them as the acoustic sound from a papered cigar box was at best.....crap. They only sound any good when they are run through an amp, IMO. This should help you.
Chickenbone John

I only have a pic of my dulcimer...

Rock on Steve. That looks pretty cool now all you need is to learn how to play and start your own band. Only three more to make and you could call it the "CBG Quartet"

That looks the business Steve. I'm going to do a stick dulcimer and a mountain dulcimer when I can get out of having to work for a living.
