Any one have any experience of this lathe?

Hi all, I have new student and she wants to buy a small lathe to supplement her cabinet making business. Not having much money she is shopping around. Rutland is offering this Buy Woodturning Lathe & 3 Xact Precision Chuck online at Rutlands.co.uk . Now I have one of their chucks which kept on throwing a jaw into the air (it came off the spiral thread so I had to use it with gaffer tape to stop it shooting the customers). But at this price the system may be worth it.

Any comments welcome.

It's a generic Far East import Pierre probably made by the Burt group Wood Lathe - Burt Group Co., Ltd. - page 1.
It's not a bad price for what you get, Rutland's customer service has been called into question many times on forums so if you have any problems it might take some sorting out.
If you look on the specifications of the chuck it does look quite small which was not the impression I got when looking at the photo.
Personally I'd consider D&M tools as a more reputable dealer & Record as their after sales service is good on warrentied products in my experience,something like Record Power Dml305 Cast Iron Midi Lathe M33 X 3.5, RPWDML305M33 at D&M Tools

If you like this machine then look at the Axminster Hobby Series AWSL no doubt the same machine at under £200.

I bought the one below back in February. It was my first lathe and yes, it does a good job; however there is no chuck with it. It does have a cast iron bed although at top speed it did have a tendency to walk off while I was working so I had to drill holes in the legs to anchor it to my bench. Another good point is that you can alter speed without changing belts etc.

Without sounding big-headed, I feel I have already outgrown it and will be upgrading in the new year. My little Drapper will be recycled as a buffing system
