Having had a go last week at tealight just posted, I saw David Lowe at the Harrogate show so had another go. Its not finished yet but sanded to 400 grit, then spray on acrylic sealer, brass brushed, ebonised, followed by Pinflair Buff-It, Red, Green and Blue. Unfortunately I have three deep scratches to one side not seen till Buff-It applied, so whilst it is still in the chuck I will have another go at improving the surface in due course. What do you think?

Now think could be oak, not sure of my timbers unless I have provenance. The bowl is a little over 8". Now to turn the centre and the bottom.

This one is looking great. Are you going for the natural colour in the bowl area. I notice that where you added colours it looks like rays radiating out not sure if it was intentional or not but it looks a great effect. I know I have put a finish on only to find a mark that is not wanted.

that looks a bit like ash to me. Before colouring was it very light in colour?

Yes it was, to be honest I don't know the difference between oak or ash. I guessed it was ash, but then as dalboy had said other wood looked like oak, it had me second guessing. Simple answer is I don't know my woods. I'm getter better at it, but way behind others on here. Any roads, the centre has been cut and I left it natural, however I am not happy with the bottom, so it will need further work. Looks too heavy at this time. Back at work tomorrow so on hold at this time.

The lines were a result of spraying whilst lathe spinning. I liked it so left them alone. If not I would have to remand and recognise. A trial that worked.
