Here's a squadron that I made last weekend but sold the fifth before I managed to photograph it which was a shame because it was a beautiful piece of Laburnum. Think that says loads about what the public like in terms of wood, we drool over Thuja Burr, and others, and the lady went straight for some twisted grain laburnum.

Others in the photo are Cocobolo, Thuja Burr, Walnut, and Olivewood. The Olivewood is not the european type (Olea europea) but South African Olivewood (Olea latifolia) which is a bit pinker and much tougher. Tends to be tighter grained.

Finish on these was not as good as it might have been, not exhibition quality but general customer very happy quality, the light hasnt been kind, but then again I aint no David Bailey.

They look very nice Neil, I've just got thuja burr blank and I'm looking forward to using it. I haven't yet made any fountain pens, do you find there is much of a market for them? I always imagine doctors and lawyers using them but not much else?

Just done my annual accounts and for every one rollerball I sell, I sell 5 fountain pens. Ordered 30 of the Atrax fountain and 5 Rollerball, so wasnt far out and the accounts have supported my guesswork.

Just goes to show how wrong ones assumptions can be. I'll have to try them. It's knowing where best to sell them as I don't do craft fairs and the like yet. I just sell to work colleagues and friends, but then I have only been making pens for 3 months.

Thats a very nice kit Neil, I'm guessing they're from the states? As usual you've certainly done them proud.

I was under the same impression as yourself until I did a few craft shows and I sell more fountain pens and slimlines/streamlines than any other. I make a fountain pen for myself and take that along for people to try as they're nothing like the ones I remember from school. Not scratchy and don't seem to empty into your pocket... Yet!

Paul,

Talk to Ed at Exotic Blanks. This kit is available from Turners retreat but only in chrome and gold i think. The GM is a class pen, and its not that expensive.
