Hi Everyone
I am looking for help again!!
I posted a few weeks ago with regard to the best saw to have in my workshop.
I eventually settled on the Record BS250.
I received this item yesterday. I unpack it I tried to run it.
it did not work. After some time examining it I found a number of problems.
the top cover was broken, the micro switch plunger was missing. I worked around the problem than switched it on.
the noise from the motor was horrendous it sounded like a bag of nails which nearly frightened me to death.
then I noticed that the bottom drive belt had come off. I have now lost confidence in Record tools and do not want to order another.
This machine is being returned with a full refund.
I would be grateful if any one could recommend another make of bench mounted band saw that would be suitable preferably a 12 inch saw.

Davew

That is a shame I have the bigger Record the 350BS and not had a problem with that apart from the poor blade that came with it which is probably true with most bandsaws. In the UK the best blades I have found is from Tuffsaws. The other smaller bandsaw I have is a Metabo Bas 260 swift and once I set it up I have had no problems think this has been superseded by the BAS 261 now.

I would probably try Axminster tools next as like Record they also have a good reputation when things go wrong.

You were probably just unlucky. When I was looking for a bandsaw I was going to go for the BS250 as they had a lot of good reviews, but at the same time a forum member was selling a bandsaw which was the Charnwood equivalent which I bought instead. No problems with it.

Davew I sent you a pm a few weeks ago don't know if you got it.

The record situation is a bit disappointing but believe it's down to where they are manufactured and packaged that they have had issues with. But understood that it had been resolved. May be wrong, however they do a good guarantee on them and do give good service in spares if you need them.

The main issue with recommending another equivalent saw is difficult due to the fact that many are manufactured in the same factories in Taiwan and China. Just made to a set specification for the customers.

Having said that there are recognised suppliers as they have strict quality control and regular inspections, something that Record have obviously let them selves down with it seems.

Scheppach Basa 3 is a good machine being 800w. The basa 4 is again much better due to the motor capacity. That said the purchase price is effected.

Charnwood and Axminster have machines targeted at entry level craft use, but also have bigger machines for what they call "trade" meaning it's expected run hours are greater and the build is usually has larger motor, bearings and throats sizes.

SIP are a good stable breed IMHO, I have a 14" floor unit which has given great service. Apart from a bearing that has started to sing at me every now and again recently. But built to be easily repaired and replaced..

To be honest if you are prepared to wait and search the forums and the adds you may well get a decent 2nd hand unit that is much better quality.

The actual footprint of a bandsaw is not great and I would try to get as large a machine as fits both the budget and space. One time I had a nine feet high bandsaw of great age that was Ideal when I was breaking down Burl logs.

Dave have you spoke to Record about the problems, their after sales service is brilliant. I’ve had a few Record machines with no issues at all. Ring them mate.
