My big Bandsaw is a 21 inch 3phase 3 H P commonly called a 5300 because it is a many badged unit sold by lots of retailers as their own brand.

Observing just now following re bearing the blade train I make the following observations.

They are notorious because the sawdust collects and jams the lower guides under the saw table.

Sawdust builds up in heaps around the two outlets from the Dust Extractor.

So I took a few pics to illustrate and I have a solution to add one more extraction point at or about the lower guides.

From Pic 1.The relationship of the outlet below the closed door

From pic 2. you can see the placement of the outlet is no where near the outfall of dust and the dust has to build up before its in the path of the suction.

The need for an outlet suction point adjacent to the lower rollers. This I propose to do.

Ah Mark that's because it's in Australia it's upside down. It must be an English bandsaw as it would be the right way round over here

Is it an OAV machine Peter.

Band Saw, Woodworking Machinery:SBW-5300 (CE) - OAV EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS, INC.

I have the 4800, I believe they manufacture for many brands & are really sturdy machines.
On mine I sealed the triangular section behind the bottom door from where the top dust port is taken forcing the air to be drawn through the blade slot, it has helped.
On my previous bandsaw I rigged a piece of solid plastic pipe with a kerf cut that the blade ran through just above the bottom guides & connected the pipe to a vacuum, again it helped but still failed to completely eliminate the problem.
I'll be interested to see how you get on.

Looks very similar to my Charnwood that also needs dust collection at the bottom bearings

My first thought is a 4 inch by 2 inch section with two holes across at the lower bearings and yes i proposed sealing that exterior front housing under where the door closes on a hinge so it can be cleaned and the brush adjusted. They cost 21/2 grand or more. Our Wood Guild bought a Hammer brand it has turned out badly.I also think I owe Brian an apology what I thought on his bandsaw frozen post was ca stuffed LHS lower bearing could be just the cam adjust makes it look odd.

Ive been cleaning in the workshop today so when I got to the bandsaw I took a couple of photos.

This is the bottom bearing assembly & the compartment from where the top dust extraction point is on my OAV machine

All I did was to glue a triangular piece of wood to the hollow part of the door inline with the compartment & then stick some thin foam rubber to the wood.

Now with the door shut the only air that can be drawn into the compartment is through the two apertures through which the blades pass, I hook this up to the HPLV vacuum for maximum extraction.

The bandsaws that i have had over the years have all been crap with extraction .. It is better to buy bigger to allow more to collect in the bottom section .. :whistling:

In the process of fitting a perspex triangle right there at the top like the idea of fitting the triangle on the swinging door as well IMHO the bottom extraction is a waste of suction and will fit a right angle pipe directed more to the right when I am finished I will take pics. The top one is a bear because you have to open it my way to work with the blade. I am having wonderful success with hardened blades. My best success is using 1/2 inch blades tried the largest size and it was fearfull grabby in fact downright dangerous.

Dug liked your method of the block of wood and the seal when the door is closed I was more than half way with my method shown here using a triangle of perspex so could do a visual and yes its a ripper. My after and before pic then the extraction down the bottom I will use the method Jim said let it fall where it likes its easy cleaned and harmless there and I will block of the suction there. It will create a gale through the top side one.

That should help, how about another brush on the other side of the blade to close the gap off even more but still let some air through.

Great mod peter:thumbs:
How would it go if you a zero clearance insert where the brush is?

Great until you make a cut that deflects the blade when real problems occur in zero clearances so far my experience especially cutting branches or logs sometimes Burl bang goes your zero clearance.

I have given this a real lot of thought and consideration as the carry over in the blade is there all the time with one brush I have almost concluded to use but one brush and leave shed dust fall where it may on the bottom and doing a regular brush out or preferred vac out keeping an eye on the top guide bearings. There has to be a better way. From the U Tube etc using the thin blades do away with the bottom guides and use a special attachment for real short curves etc as demoed by professionals was quite a lesson also. My biggest bandsaw in the past had 3 foot wheels stood 8 feet 6 inches high a C frame so my love hate affair has been over many years trying to find the best ways for me. Have fun the excitement diminishes IMHO.

That is a good idea Peter, the extraction on my Jet is poor to be honest. Though i have it reduced from 100mm down to 63mm at the moment, not sure if going to a full 100mm will help? Also i have two other machines piped up to the extractor, using shut off gates though .. :thinks:

With my two twelve inch Sanders I run the extractor from both easily without gates no probs isolated as we are from good well made gates. I run ten different dust systems the workshop is long about 20 metres in all varying widths and conformation. Going to shut down some stations. Double glazing arrives tomorrow for our main room chaos theory being applied.
