I don't do much other turning than pens but had to have a go at a Banksia pod as I had one in the load I got from my friend a week or two ago. The jury is still out if I enjoyed doing it or not!

I am with you on that one Paul, I think they are overrated lumps of cheese.
But that is just me, I find myself going off of all this fill it with metal dust and pretty fancy stuff.
Leave the fiddly crap for the wimin init.
If it don't good and solid it goes in the bin, can't be arsed with the pine cones and corn cobs and watch parts etc
I have recently finished a consignment of saucepan handles and the wood I had to work with was a load of crap.
English oak that I think must have been dragged behind the Mary Rose with a failure rate of 4 in 10 flying around the shed.
Having had that keeping me on my toes I wanna get stuck in all the time and can't relax while spinning now.
Moan over nice ashtray you have made yourself.

You get the impression from the style of this piece that it was bloody hard work! Did you wear your safety glasses or did the seeds get you?

There weren't any seeds in it Neil. Its about 15-20 years old so I guess they've dried up and dropped out. I've got another 2 but they might sit on the shelf for a while!

Safety Gear? remember I was a diver and stupid... Safety is for kids :funny::funny:

Yeah of course I wear it, I've got a respirator I wear all (most (some)) of the time.

Yep, they are messy things to turn, but a lot of people like them! I also like them, and prefer to leave a bit of a fluffy stuff when turning, i.e. not going very deep. Unfortunately I do not have any photos around at the moment.

Never turned one. But seen a video and they look really messy, lots of seeds flying at you at high speed.
But I can see why they are popular, can look really good when finished
