What you want from a wood stain for pen making is one that will not raise the grain when applied and will not fade or change colour over time.


For the first reason you should avoid water based stains and for the second you should look for something that is not sensitive to UV.


Chestnut spirit stains fulfil both of these criteria and they do a sample pack with 25ml bottles of each colour which will last ages for small items like pens.
