I ordered a couple of the new blanks from Pen Blanks and Moulds. The ones with a picture glued to the tube and cast in resin.
I turned one down to night to see how they come out. It came out very well. Yes there is a join were the picture is folded over the tube but on this one you would have to look really close to see it. I put the blank on the bushings and turned it round this took a couple of minutes. I then took it off the bushing and put it in the lathe four jaw and machined the two ends down to the brass tube. I then popped it back on the bushings and turned the blank down to the bushings. I dry sanded to 600 grit then switched to 0000 wire wool with brasso. I then used the paste stuff that comes with grit in it. The brown stuff first then the white. Can not remember the name of it at the moment. I then used the pad thingys to finish it off. I applied a good quality polish and job done. The whole thing took about an hour. I have a couple more to try but if this is anything to go by they are a winner in my book.

Hi Dave.
I think the words your looking for maybe , Yorkshire grit and micro mesh pads.
That pen does look stunning. Must try one of those blanks.

Really lovely looking pen Dave, I got a bit lost when you said you turned it round then took it off and machined down to the Brass tubes, I thought the normal way is square the ends first before you fit the bushings and turn it. Anyway, a great result.:drool:

I find it easier to turn all my blanks round as a first step it's easier to work with them after that. This blank came with the tubes already fitted.

Great looking pen Dave, I’m glad you liked the blanks

When I turn any blanks I trim the ends of the blanks on a belt sander using a small barrel trimming jig (a lot of people use a magnetic V block & transfer punches), then I knock the edges of the blank off on the belt sander.

It was meant to say disk sander for the end of the blanks:winking:

Looks great.

You will always get a seam when turning these type of blanks, no way to avoid it but the clip does a good job of hiding it. Depends on the image if it is really noticeable.
