Hi, Guys,

Not a good day...I've been looking forward to turning a stick of that golden-looking hawthorn Woody was good enough to give us, so, after super-glueing all the roof tiles in place prior to the expected hurricane, I retreated to the workshop for an hour and made a Euro. As I was turning the wood all that interesting gold hue disappeared, leaving me with a featureless blank, rather like white holly. Oh dear, methinks, reaching for the white spirit. A wipe of that stuff normally pops any grain there is to pop. Nothing. Still a plain blank. So out came my stains. I tried applying various oak stains and still nothing. Finally gave up trying to breathe life into this ungrateful bugger (the Gobi Desert is more interesting!) sanded back to a beigy-white, and assembled it. Somebody might buy it, or I'll give it away as a consolation prize, LOL!
Sorry about the poor piccies - I think even the camera was disgusted with this sad-looking piece!

Bob.

Not wasted, you have always learnt something by it..

The only thing I would say is, the most Euros are thinner bottom section and have a stepped fitting. Not sure if it looks right this way with both of them being the same..

LOL! Guys,

Woody, I am NOT criticising your wood, matey - it's the luck of the draw on how wood turns on the lathe, as opposed to how it looks before turning, so sleep easy my friend. And tell that wife of yours to leave you alone!

Silver, it's my experience that the fat Euros sell better on my stall than the tapered ones. It's often a good thing to leave more "meat" on, especially when the blank has a lot of character (unlike this one!).

Thanks to all for your comments!

Bob.

LOL! Guys,

Nowt wrong with white pens, Steven, except I can't seem to sell any! I've had a coupla pure white hollies and a matched wedding set in holly, and they are sticking to me like excreta sticks to a blanket!!!

Hi, Jim,

I'm gonna try passing it off as a narwhal tusk!

The Pen,

I like the shape stepped differences are not as appealing IMHO.

Agree that looking at a blank is one thing as you turn is another in fact sometimes a few different pens emerge after your present experience if it were me I would hesitate to turn deeper in case a hole appeared or something.

Kind regards Peter.:rolling:

Bob, the way to get rid of it is to price it about £25.00 - £35.00 more than you normally charge for that kit, it will become so attractive to people they will want a matching set.

Ho, Brian, You've cheered me up! (Actually, I'm only saying this in case you send that bloody dog after me!!!)

Hi, Jim (Penpal), LOL! I know what you mean - I was turning a stick of burr wych elm earlier and a piece flew out that was as big as the Rock Of Gibraltar. End of blank!!!

Hi, Jim (Buckeye), Are you in the market for it, then? LOL!

Hi Jim (bluntchisel) no I'm not in the market for it, it looks like a a sickly version of antler.

Take a guess
If nothing else it`s all good experience Bob :thinks: & look on the bright side I`d rather spend a morning messin & failing in the workshop than a morning doing jobs for "her in doors", which is usually what I end up having to do if I`m loitering around the house
