I'm guessing some of you will be wondering what all the fuss is about but I have stoically refused to have anything to do with facebook for reasons propbably best kept to myself! However I took a look at Terry's page and I was very impressed with the look of it and people, potential customers, keep asking to see photos of my pens and am I on facebook. So I'm coming to the realisation that I may not be able to resist much longer as, from Terry's page, it seems to be a good way of displaying photos of the pens I have made for people to look at. Why am I rambling on about this? Well I would like to ask for some help and tips on using facebook before I sign up. I have no idea how it works. I'm not a technophobe I just haven't had a reason to join but I think it might be helpful now. :thinks:

First of all Ray you need a Facebook account, that will give you your personal page, the ones that most people you see have, lots of them full of dross, but.......

Once you have your personal page you can them create a "page" this would be for your pens and would be something like Terrys and many others seen on here. My page as a link in my signature below.

These "pages" are where you would put info about your pens, turning etc. You don't get loads of unwanted info appearing on this "page" although you do have to set it up so that you don't get unwanted postings etc.

Thank you Billy, that's really helpful. Your page is similar to Terry's and would do for me. Was it you who offered a website or something a few months ago?

Doh, hardly ever go into the forums by the front page, always from New Posts so I didn't see it. I can't make up my mind whether to get a website or not to be honest. I'm not in business as such, just selling surplus items :bwink:

I would just go with the Facebook page for a start, you may well find its all you need, if its a success it will take a bit of your time up updating it, answering questions etc. A website will add to that time lost from turning.:thinks::thinks:

I don't use Facebook for selling pens Ray although I did get a request from the States to sell them over there which I declined. It is only a hobby to me and Facebook is a way of showing my pens to friends and relatives. Another reason it is a way of storing photos of your pens !!!
Do as Billy says or get a young relative to set one up for you !!!!

The Facebook pages that have been done by Forum members look great and I think it is a very rewarding way of displaying your turned items which no doubt could lead to a few sales. It looks a bit out of my depth though.

'Deep breaths' I'll give it a go, I have despised facebook and all the crap you hear goes on around it. People incriminating themselves with careless talk and all the mundane rubbish people use it for. Not to mention the criminal underworld using it that you hear of in the media. When I used to use chat forums it was in the days of MIRC and anything that you said disappeared when the chat window was closed. However, I think it's a case of you can't beat em so may as well join em. As long as I can control who makes comments on the page that should be fine. Now all I need to sort out is the photography of my pens. I think I'll try your idea Terry and get some smoked glass.

Take a guess
Sign in under an alias Ray, face book don't like it but all I did was get an email address with the name I wanted & signed up, you can then start a page with any title you want.

I keep this email only for face book, only people I really know & am friends with are my friends on Facebook so I get very little activity on my personal page & any profile Facebook are building on me doesn't really relate.

That said to promote your page you will have to include it in some correspondence somewhere or no one will ever find it, add it to you signature on here, invite people to like your page, it will be a slow build but I think that's the best way.
