My ma-in-law had one of these guys cold calling yesterday and despite her saying a definite no as she wouldn't live long enough to reap the benefits (She's in her 88th year!), the guy persuaded her to let him return this morning and "measure evry room in the house".
Luckily she is still astute enough to ring and tell us. She had decided to stick a note on the door saying she's gone out but clearly he'd just come back so my wife has gone over to "sort him out". I feel sorry for the guy as she'll tear strips off him, take his photograph and report him to the police:funny: She's furious anyway as she's being forced to make a 50 mile round trip and change her plans for today.
Ma is clearly pannicked as she's been worrying all night and rang us again at 7 am to make sure my wife is still going to be there

Some of these con men really are barstewards ! She lives in a small close of around 20 small retirement bungalows in an affluent area. I doubt if any resident is under 70 and almost all are widows in their 80s only so easy meat to someone selling products for which they'll likely never re-coupe their purchase price.:nonono:

One of the best ways to get rid of people at the door is to say that you rent the property.

I do and get about 3 or 4 junk phone calls everyday, coincidently yesterday I had an intelligent sounding guy ring me yesterday telling me how I could have free solar panels on my roof.
If it's a south roof I would reap some benefits of reduced electricity bills etc, he went on for some time and I strung him along for the sake of it.
Its when he was arranging to send a rep to call at my address I asked if he has permission from the council to install these things on their roof.
He gave me a mouthful of abuse before putting the phone down, I think I am now crossed off their list.
I like the ones that phone from India telling me that my confuser is giving them error messages, I have lots of fun with them.

Keep us informed Bob I am sure we can form a pensioners heavy mob between us if needed init. :nooidea::nooidea::nooidea:

In her situation they know they aren't rented Peter.
The properties can only be bought by existing estate residents over 55 and not allowed to rent out. The conmen know that the residents have moved from much larger, very expensive houses and are usually pretty well off.

My wife is used to dealing with nasty, bolshy prisoners Brian. Believe me he'll wonder what hit him. If I wasn't tied up here (pretending to work) I'd have gone with her for a laugh.
Why do you think you got a shock when we met at york - I'm only 35 really,:whistling: That's the effect she has on people:funny:

My mate is a D.I. at the police HQ close to her home so I'll be reporting to him this evening and have no doubt there will shortly be a pc plod "having a word" in this guys ear.

I deal with them in different ways, especially calls from India

1. I try to keep them on the phone for as long as I possibly can to save them calling others. I feel that I'm doing a good duty here and managed to keep one who said my computer wasn't working properly on the phone for 42 mins. This is my record but I am always trying to improve the time. At the end he shouted at me... "I AM A COMPUTER EXPERT ARE YOU?". When I said yes the phone went dead.

2. If I haven't got time to mess them about as much as I'd like I ask them if their parents know that the job their doing is trying to con people out of money which has ended up with tears.

3. Pushy solar panel salesmen (once so far) are invited to come to my house. I already have solar panels. If they don't waste my time I don't waste theirs.

I am a member of the TPS and so shouldn't get unsolicited calls. If I do however, it is just another chink in my ability to get into heaven!

Hope your wife rips him to shreds Bob. These cold callers are a pain it the ass. We get them about once a week even though there is a sign saying no cold callers (in not so polite words).
They claim they didn't see the sign. Yeah right!:rant::rant:

Had a glazing salesman just last night, short conversation and he got really upset when I said "look do me favour and just f*** o**"

"I'm only doing my job"

Sorry, that's not a job IMHO.

I feel sorry for the people who can't deal with these pushy salespersons it should not be allowed to happen. You hear of so many innocent people getting conned out of thousands of pounds.

Me I LOVE EM. I play along with em until they eventually give up with my stupid answers to their questions and they hang up on me. I have noticed a dramatic drop off in the amount of calls that I get.

My last escapade was with a cavity wall and loft insulation company who told me that the National Data Base indicated that I was eligible for a massive discount to have the work done. I told them on a number of occasions that the database was incorrect and that I had cavity wall and loft insulation. Calls still kept coming from them so I let them send a rep out. He done his survey/assessment and told me of the advantage of having the work done. He priced the work up and with the discount showed me the the saving that I would make on heating bills and then presented me with the agreement to sign.

I then got out the certificates of installation from the company who done the work for me some 12 months earlier and asked him if these were no longer valid. His face flushed up and he gathered his stuff without saying a word and left.

Needless to say the details of this company were duly passed on to Trading Standards and guess what no more phone calls.

Genuine cold calling salesmen and charity scroungers are bad enough without this sort of criminal activity.

Your missus should have invited Mr Plod to join her Bob. Although he's probably too busy watching the traffic on the A1.

OK update time, will keep it as short as I can so none of you auld codgers fall asleep.:whistling:

Apparently original "canvasser" was a nice guy, (well he would be) but he wouldn't leave until she agreed an appointment.
She hardly slept last night worrying in case he was dodgy and was casing the house. After her phone calls to us this morning and before my wife got there she also phoned the police. Wifes name is Sue btw.

Sue took a phone call from the company who said they were SolarTech asking if the "invitation" appointment was OK and that a surveyor would arrive at 11am. Their way of overcoming the regulations is to be "invited" to talk about the product.
Sue looked up the company on the internet and phoned them to be told they do not cold call but there is a company called SolarTech North East misrepresenting their name and they were taking action to stop the practice..

Policeman arrived just before "surveyor" but stayed out of sight whilst Sue answered the door. She asked for identification but was told he didn't have any. He then went back to car to look for some and returned with his driving licence to be confronted by a large bobbie who had swapped places at the door. Apparently the look on his face was a picture and he took several steps backwards.:funny: The copper took his licence to check.

When Sue challenged him he stated several times he was from "solarTech" even when she said he wasn't and eventually he admitted it was a different company. she then gave him a real going over about him and his colleagues targeting old people and said there would be action taken if they called anyone in the street in future.
Policeman agreed and though it seems not a police matter he warned the surveyor* and also telephoned his company to tell them to put their house in order and that a dim view would be taken of any future complaints.
Surveyor* was of course a salesman expecting to give a presentation lasting 90 minutes with a sale at the end of it. His time was wasted and he was sent off with a flea in his ear and more than a little shaken.

A letter has been sent to SolarTech and another letter of complaint is being compiled to SolarTech North East copy of which will be attached to a complaint which will be forwarded to trading standards.
I've sent a message to DSA asking if they are members in which case the info will be sent to them as well.
