Black palm try out

I made this pen today using black palm wood, it's tricky to turn but worth persivering with.

Chris I agree its a mongrel to turn,I used to buy this timber from Africa thru a help group as large wooden spoons that I would cut up. The worst experience (only once) was the tubes that make up the tree popped out on me after finishing.

My feeling was it becomes so tough i would use a rotary sander to bring it down to size. Sounds extreme but when you win over it gives great satisfaction. Like Bill I cannot see your pen clearly to comment but I praise your willingness to have a go.

In relation to seeing clearly the picture presented to me is a difficult one,I drive without glasses,age 84 .

I do have answers for Pics that work for me.

I use an open box arrangement made from 20mm conduit,slip on tees and elbows resting on foam plastic (set in about an inch). lighting ,one lamp either side,one resting on the frame (conduit) on top. For me after testing etc in the first instance it takes me 5 minutes to photograph my pens etc and have them in a library then transferred to a post on the net.

Pics attached flash on Camera, Pic of my light box shows a piece of copy paper in an arc as a background. PIcs of Spoons I used to import from Africa and cut off the stems for pen blanks.

Everything I do with pens is broken down to repeatability. Your pen Black Palm is really composed of tuberous roots intertwined making it different from timber.

I'm impressed. I couldn't even manage to drill a hole through black palmira never mind turn it. It just crumbled and fell apart. I only had a couple of blanks, maybe they were bad examples.

Can't see any detail with the dark photo.
To show off your workmanship get rid of the distracting background and use
a white uncluttered background.

Good on ya Chris ... never met bill but I know he's as blind as a bat

I know he gets so close to the blanks when turning he use his nose to feel for the rough spots

As for the photo's, general consensus is a white background so the emphasis is on the pen. Once you master that then you can get more arty farty

if you have an offcut left of the black palm, it is an interesting experiment to sand it to 400 grit or so, then put it in a bit of bleach for 20 mins. wash it off afterwards. you will get a markedly whiter white. I used thin household bleach. You will get issues with raised grain which will need resanding.

The photo is just a quick phone pic, but you can get the gist of it. Also it is end grain.

Thanks Chris, you weren’t to know & like us all you want critique so you can improve so a plain background works wonders. It also gives you a chance of Pen of the week with a well turned & presented pen.
Thanks to all you guys who came to my defence, it is much appreciated.
As for Brad saying I have to get real close nearly touching with my nose, we have a new career at Llandudno. Like others she wears her name tag on the breast pocket of her uniform. I went to see what her name was & had to get so close I nearly ended up with a black eye. it was worth it though.
