Has anyone done a boiled linseed oil only finish? This is a Thailand rosewood blank for a Knurl GT pen. So far, I've only put BLO on it, and I really like the sheen. I'm not too keen on CA finishes, and normally I would finish it with some sort of clear spray lacquer or enamel. But I love how this looks. I'm just not sure how well it would hold up.

The natural grease from handling will probably make it go to matt finish in a short space of time and the wood may well get dirty from handling too. CA IMHO is the most durable finish and if you sell your pens you'd want them to retain their look for as long as possible:thinks:

Oil is a very good finish but it needs about 6 coats I use oil on all my food bowls and it last for years even in a catering environment it is a proven finish over many years I for one prefer it to ca finish

Oil is a lovely finish, as Woody says a coat per day for a week, a coat per week for a month, a coat per month for a year, a coat once a year after that.

I have used BLO on lighter woods to help darken, left overnight before applying a finish ..

CA might give your pens a longer finish but may also in the long term finish your lungs

The only way I can find out if a CA finish lasts is to see a pen in daily use over a period of time. The wife has a streamline I made for her with a hybrid blank that I finished with CA so I'll keep an eye on it. I use oil finish on most things I turn now other than pens but I can't see it being very practical for use on pens I sell if it has to be reapplied on a regular basis.

You're right about the fumes from CA on the lungs. I use a fume mask every time I use CA now. I have no tolerance for it any more

I do not know if you guys/gals can get your hands on any Pen Plus finish. It is safe and holds up pretty good.

Pens Plus

I have also use BLO followed by two light coats of thin CA without accelerator.

Opening Pandoras box just the word finishes brings to mind the incredible numbers of them, at our Exhibition one of our members makes walking sticks he uses this oil on them they are magnificent. Today and tomorrow again as a steward the variety of finishes would amaze you hard to show in pics.

If the oil finish is applied properly it *WILL* hold up and be good. What seems to be missing from many post that I see is oil can be used to FILL but it is not an easy process to do. On gunstocks, i.e. black powder ones we commonly see this very thing. They are dipped then pseudo dried and repeated over and over. Hand rubbing the advantages with oil is burnishing and a somewhat fast drying oil will be very helpful.

I would urge you to look at polymerized linseed oil vs BLO for any project like this.
