I came by a very large slab of Jarrah burl and looking to make a few pens out of it to begin with

Normal colour is a little too light for me and I use BLO as part of my finish so a quick wipe with BLO gives it some depth prior to CA finishing

Problem I get is occasional dull spots. I've had it with one other wood and wonder if I need to let the BLO dry before starting CA ( I don't normally) I don't sand through finish as a habit but as it's near the end perhaps I did?

Wondering if I should use sanding sealer instead of BLO but again not sure of the benefits

Any ideas:thinks:

I stopped using BLO with CA some time ago because I got the same results. BLO does add depth and color but I would wait at least a week to let it dry.

Andy when you showed the burl recently you said you scrubbed it up and used cleaners maybe some of that treatment ingrained itself, with washing using methylated spirits can help, try using U Beaut triple E polish I find with some of our Aussie burls they respond quite well this way as well. AQs a final treatment the brown waxstick used judiciously I find is marvellous and in keeping with Triple EEE. If I use blo it is a very faint wipe but I discontinued it long ago. Sometimes HM Customs regs for allowing Aust. timbers require chemical treatment that can also soak in another favourite is wax dipping. Looks the makings of a good pen mate.

BLO should be made illegal for use with CA. (IMHO)

I thought it was, it's a bloody stupid idea in the first place, mixing oil with anything other than fish & chips is frowned upon in my book.
We're getting too many references to the IAP on these forums lately, will you people stop it please?

That's because it is a great resource and people would have to be daft to ignore it.
